Coffee, Spice, and Everything Nice

Coffee, Spice, and Everything Nice

Why coffee and spices pair perfectly, plus three latte recipes to try right now

For many, waking up to brew a fresh pot of coffee is the only way to start the day. The sound of the grinder and the aroma of freshly ground beans meeting boiling water is close to a spiritual experience. Add a bit of milk and cinnamon, and suddenly, the moment transforms into something even more extraordinary.

The divine pairing of coffee and spices is no accident. It's a story that began in Ethiopia centuries ago and unfolded around the globe. Coffee and spices were bartered together along ancient spice trade routes like the Silk Road and introduced across continents, bringing us the comforting, complex beverages we love today.

At Kauai Coffee, we recognize the extraordinary steps it took to bring coffee to our island and honor it by growing exceptional 100% Hawaiian Coffee for you and your 'ohana today. Learn more about the history of coffee and spices and enjoy three floral and spice latte recipes included below to warm up your winter mornings.

Coffee's Journey Through History

The story of coffee begins in the ninth century in the highlands of present-day Ethiopia, where legend says a goat herder named Kaldi made an extraordinary discovery. One day, Kaldi noticed his goats prancing with unusual vigor after eating bright red fruit from an unfamiliar plant. Curious, he sampled the fruit himself and felt a wave of energy. Word of this energizing plant spread quickly, and soon, coffee became a coveted commodity.

Ethiopia to Europe

From Ethiopia, traders carried coffee along ancient spice routes, which led to its arrival on the Arabian Peninsula. Here, coffee met and mingled with fragrant spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. These warm, aromatic additions elevate coffee's flavor, creating combinations that still please the palate. In the 1600s, coffee arrived in Europe, and it became a symbol of sophistication. Coffee houses spread from Venice to Vienna to London becoming a centerpiece in the social fabric and intellectual elites.

Voyage to Hawaii

The tale of coffee's arrival in Hawaii is filled with intriguing characters worthy of a Hollywood plot. A Spanish seafarer named Don Francisco de Paula Marin landed on the Hawaiian Islands in the late 18th century and became a trusted advisor and interpreter to King Kamehameha I.

Marin was a charismatic individual and skilled botanist who maintained connections with notable pirates of his time, enabling him to acquire seeds and plant cuttings of various crops. Coffee, pineapple, mango, cotton, and oranges are among the crops linked to Marin, and he is believed to have sown the first coffee seeds in Honolulu in 1817.

After the death of King Kamehameha I and II, Chief Boki, the Royal Governor of Oahu, laid the groundwork for the introduction and subsequent commercialization of coffee in Hawaii. Boki was first exposed to coffee and cafes in London and recognized the possibility of growing coffee as a crop in Hawaii.

Boki collaborated with British botanist John Wilkinson. Together, they journeyed on the HMS Blonde back to Hawaii, stopping in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to purchase coffee saplings. In 1825, Boki and Wilkinson returned to Hawaii and planted coffee in the Manoa Valley on Oahu that same year. The unique Hawaiian climate, characterized by morning sunshine, afternoon rain, and mineral-rich volcanic soil, proved ideal for growing coffee.

Today, the Kauai Coffee Estate carries the coffee story forward, growing single-origin Hawaiian coffee that reflects the unique character of the islands and respect for the land.

Why Coffee and Spices Pair Perfectly

What makes coffee and spices such a perfect pair? In addition to their long and storied journey across cultures and continents, the answer lies in their shared complexity. Coffee's natural flavor profile ranges from fruity and nutty to rich and earthy.

This tapestry of tastes harmonizes beautifully with the bold, aromatic qualities of spices. Together, these ingredients create an experience that elevates every day. Brewing with high-quality beans, like 100% Hawaiian Coffee from Kauai, and adding your favorite blend of milk and spices is a great way to warm up winter and tantalize your tastebuds.
